This page explains, in plain terms, what happens to your information, and your child's, when you use this site or book lessons with me. I'm a one-person tutoring service, not a big company, so there isn't much to it, but you're entitled to know exactly what there is.

Who I am & how to contact me

I'm Samuel Taboola, and I run Samuel Maths, a small online tutoring service for GCSE and A-Level Maths and Physics. I'm the person responsible for any information you share with me (the "data controller", in legal terms). If you have any questions about your information, or you'd like me to delete it, you can reach me directly:

What information I collect

  • When you get in touch. Through the enquiry form, email or WhatsApp, you give me your name, email address, phone number and whatever you write in your message, which often includes your child's name, school year and subject.
  • When your child has lessons. I keep what I need to teach well: your child's name, school year, exam board and subjects, short notes on the topics we've covered and how they're getting on, and the work done on our shared whiteboard. I never record video or audio of your child.
  • When you pay. I keep a record of each lesson, the amount, and the name and date shown on your bank transfer. I never see or store card details.
  • When you visit the site. Visit statistics, as described under Cookies & analytics below.

Why I use it, and the legal basis

UK data protection law (UK GDPR) asks me to name a legal basis for each use of your information. Here they are:

  • To reply to your enquiry and arrange a first session: because you asked me to, as a step towards booking lessons (Article 6(1)(b)).
  • To teach your child, and to send you progress updates: to provide the lessons you've booked (Article 6(1)(b)).
  • To keep payment and tax records: because the law requires me to keep them (Article 6(1)(c)).
  • Google Analytics and Google Ads: only with your consent, which you give or refuse in the cookie banner (Article 6(1)(a)).
  • Cookie-free visit statistics and website security: my legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful and in keeping the site safe and working (Article 6(1)(f)).

I don't sell your information, I don't pass it to anyone for their own marketing, and I won't add you to a mailing list.

Who else handles it

I use a small number of services to run the site and the lessons. Each one handles your information only to provide its service to me:

  • FormSubmit forwards what you type in the enquiry form to my inbox (their privacy policy).
  • Zoom carries the lessons, and WhatsApp and my email provider carry our messages.
  • Netlify hosts the site and Cloudflare delivers and protects it. Like any web server, they process your device's IP address to send you the pages.
  • Simple Analytics counts visits without cookies (see below).
  • Google provides Analytics and Ads, but only if you accept them in the cookie banner.

Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where your information leaves the UK, they transfer it under safeguards that UK law allows, such as the UK–US data bridge or approved contract terms.

Cookies & analytics

The site counts visits with Simple Analytics, which sets no cookies and collects no personal information: it doesn't store your IP address or build a profile of you, so I only ever see totals, such as how many people read a page. They publish exactly what they collect.

Two Google services run only if you choose Accept all in the cookie banner:

  • Google Analytics (ID G-BSKJWE0SD5) measures how the site is used, such as which pages are visited.
  • Google Ads (ID AW-18264377431) shows me, in aggregate, when an advert leads to an enquiry, so I can tell whether my ads are worth running.

If you refuse, or simply ignore the banner, neither one loads and your browser makes no request to Google. You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. How long I keep it

  • Enquiries that don't lead to lessons: deleted within 12 months.
  • Lesson notes and your child's details: kept while lessons continue, then deleted within 12 months of the last lesson.
  • Payment records: kept for as long as the tax rules require, which is at least five years after the 31 January Self Assessment deadline for the tax year they belong to.

Your rights

You have the right to ask what information I hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how I use it, to receive a copy to take elsewhere, and to withdraw your consent to cookies at any time. Your child has these rights too, and you can use them on your child's behalf. Just email me and I'll sort it out, usually straight away, and always within one month.

If you ever feel I've mishandled your information, you also have the right to complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). I'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.
