How to revise for GCSE Maths without the last-minute panic
Most students don't struggle with GCSE Maths because they can't do it. They struggle because they revise it the way they revise everything else: read the notes, highlight them, hope something sticks. Maths doesn't reward that. Week after week, I watch the same handful of habits move my own students' grades, and this guide walks you through every one of them.

Start small, start now
You can't cram maths. A list of history dates might survive one frantic night of memorising, but maths is a skill rather than a set of facts, and skills grow the way muscles do: through repetition, spread over weeks. The student who does three short sessions a week for a couple of months will always beat the one attempting a desperate ten-hour weekend before the exam.
So start now, in small doses. Twenty to thirty minutes of focused practice beats a three-hour marathon that ends in tears and a phone in hand. Little and often keeps every topic ticking over, and it stops that horrible feeling of opening a paper and recognising nothing.
Make past papers the centre of everything
If I could get every student to do just one thing, it would be this: past papers, under timed conditions, marked honestly against the official mark scheme. Nothing else comes close as a use of revision time, yet most students do far too few of them.
Here's why they work so well. GCSE Maths is as much about recognising what a question really wants as it is about the maths itself, and the exam boards reuse the same question styles year after year. The more papers your child sees, the less the real thing can surprise them. Do practise the right board, though. AQA, Edexcel and OCR each phrase things differently, and every paper and mark scheme is free to download from the board's own website. A trick I use with my students: after marking a paper, they rewrite every question they dropped marks on from scratch, with no notes in front of them. If they can't, that topic goes straight to the top of the revision list. The marking is where the learning actually happens, not the first attempt.
Revise what's weak, not what's comfy
Almost everyone falls into this trap. Redoing topics your child already knows feels productive, because the page fills up with satisfying ticks, but it's rather like sweeping a clean floor. It looks like work. The grade doesn't move an inch.
Real progress lives in the topics that make them groan. Be honest about which ones those are, keep a written list of whatever keeps going wrong, and treat revision as the job of shrinking that list. That slight discomfort of working on a weak topic is simply the feeling of getting better at it.
Write every step down
GCSE Maths gives method marks. Even when the final answer is wrong, a question can still earn most of its marks, but only if the working is there on the page. Examiners can't award credit for maths that happened silently in your child's head.
So train the habit early: every step, written neatly, on every question. It feels slow at first. Over a whole paper, though, it pays for itself twice, catching marks that a small slip would otherwise throw away and making it far easier to spot where a long question went off the rails.
Swap re-reading for doing
Reading through notes feels like revision. Highlighting them feels even better. Unfortunately, both are among the weakest things your child can do, because recognising a page isn't the same as knowing it, and the moment a blank exam question appears that comfortable recognition evaporates.
Instead, the bulk of revision should be doing questions from a blank page. By all means keep flashcards for the bits that genuinely need memorising, such as key formulas or the exact steps of a method, but everything else should be practice problems. The rule of thumb I give my students is blunt: if you haven't picked up a pen, you haven't started revising.
Plan the run-up to exam day
Once the exam is a couple of weeks away, mix topics up rather than working through them in blocks. A few questions from different areas in one sitting looks far more like the real paper than an hour spent on a single topic ever will. Sit at least one or two full papers to time as well, calculator and all, so the length and the pace feel normal on the day.
- Check which formulas are given in the exam and which your child needs to memorise. It varies by board, so confirm from their exam board's site.
- Pack the kit the night before: a couple of working pens, a pencil and rubber for graphs, a ruler, a protractor, and a calculator they actually know how to use.
- Stop revising early the evening before and get a proper night's sleep. A tired brain drops easy marks, and those final few hours of cramming cost more than they add.
How you can help as a parent
Here's the good news: you don't need to remember the quadratic formula to make a real difference. Nobody is asking you to be the maths teacher. Your job is the structure around the revision, and it matters more than most parents realise.
- Help set up a quiet space and a simple routine, so revision has a time and a place rather than happening "later".
- Offer to mark a past paper against the mark scheme. The answers are all there, so you don't need to do any maths, and it takes the boring bit off your child's plate.
- Notice when the same topic keeps coming up wrong. That's the signal to get some focused help on it before it dents their confidence.
- Praise the effort and the consistency, not just the score. Maths confidence is fragile, and steady encouragement does more than pressure ever will.
And if certain topics simply won't click, however many times your child goes over them, that's usually where a few focused one-to-one sessions earn their keep. Working through those exact sticking points until they finally make sense is precisely what I do.
