When maths makes your child anxious
Some students go quiet when a maths question appears. Not sulking, not refusing. Quiet in the way people go quiet when something frightens them, and then the page stays blank, and then everyone in the room gets tense. If you've watched that happen at your own kitchen table, this guide is for you, and the first thing worth saying is that it isn't a discipline problem and it isn't unusual.

Two problems that look identical
From across a room, not understanding and being frightened look the same. Blank page, no progress, a child who says they can't do it.
They're not the same, and the difference decides everything you do next.
Not understanding is a gap. Something didn't land, the next thing was built on it, and the student is stuck for an ordinary and fixable reason. Teach the missing bit and the work resumes.
Being frightened is a stress response, and it's well documented. Maths anxiety occupies the same working memory a student needs to actually do the maths, which is why a child who can answer a question calmly on a Sunday afternoon can go completely blank on the identical question in a test. Nothing was forgotten. There simply wasn't any room left to think with.
Here's the tell. If your child can do it at home and can't do it under any pressure, that's anxiety rather than a knowledge gap. If they can't do it in either setting, it's a gap, and gaps are the easier problem.
Why more practice makes it worse
The instinctive response to a bad maths result is more maths. It's the response schools recommend, it's what most parents reach for, and for a student who simply has gaps it's correct.
For a frightened student it's counterproductive, and it's worth understanding why rather than just being told so.
Fear attaches itself to exposure. Every additional hour spent stuck, every worksheet that ends in tears, is another repetition teaching your child that maths is the thing that makes them feel awful. You can't practise your way out of a feeling that practice is generating. The hours go up, the dread goes up with them, and everyone concludes the child just needs to try harder.
What breaks the loop isn't less work. It's work that stops producing the feeling.
What actually helps
Small, boring, repeatable things, mostly. None of them dramatic.
- Work below the level that frightens them. Deliberately. A student who's been failing needs a run of questions they can actually do, because the goal for a few weeks is evidence rather than progress.
- Short and predictable. Twenty minutes at the same time on the same days beats an unpredictable hour. Knowing exactly when it starts and ends removes the dread of the open-ended session.
- Remove the audience. A lot of maths fear is really fear of being seen getting it wrong. No siblings, no hovering, no watching over the shoulder while they write.
- No surprise tests. Ever. One ambush undoes a month of careful work, and it teaches them that safe moments can turn without warning.
- Separate the mistake from the person. "That line's gone wrong" and "you've gone wrong" are heard very differently by a child who's already braced for the second one.
- Let them be slow. Speed is where anxiety bites hardest, and almost nothing in GCSE Maths actually requires doing it fast.
Confidence, in my experience, does not arrive from being told to be confident. It arrives from a pile of accumulated evidence that they can do this, built slowly, at a level where the evidence is genuinely earned.
The phrases that land badly
This section is the one I'd most like parents to read, and I want to be careful with it, because every phrase here is kindly meant.
"Don't worry, I was rubbish at maths too." Said to comfort, and it does the opposite: it tells a child that this is hereditary, that it's part of who they are, and that there's no point struggling against it. It's the most common thing I hear repeated back to me by students who've given up.
"It's easy, look." Even when the working genuinely is short. If it's easy and they can't do it, what does that make them?
"You just need to concentrate." They are concentrating. That's the problem: they're concentrating hard on being frightened.
None of this makes you a bad parent, and I'd gently point out that you probably heard some of it yourself. Maths fear travels down families quietly, mostly through remarks nobody remembers making. The useful replacement is unexciting: "this bit's hard, let's do it slowly." It concedes the difficulty, which they already know about, and it doesn't hand them a permanent explanation for it.
Something I do in first sessions: I ask the student to talk me through a question they can already do easily. Not to test them, and I say so. It puts the first thing that happens in the lesson in the "I can do this" column, and with an anxious student that single choice changes how the rest of the hour goes.
Going blank in the exam room
The specific fear most families ask about: the paper turns over, the mind empties.
A few things genuinely help, and they're worth practising in advance rather than reading about the night before. Starting with a question they can definitely do, rather than question 1, gets ink on the page and settles the breathing. Knowing that they're allowed to leave a question and come back matters more than it sounds, because the panic usually comes from feeling trapped on one. And putting something down, however partial, is nearly always better than a blank space, since method marks exist and a blank earns nothing.

When it's past what a tutor can do
I should be straightforward about this, because it would be easy for a page on a tutoring site not to be.
A tutor can help with the competence side, and for many students that's most of the battle: the fear was doing a reasonable job of tracking real difficulty, and it fades as the difficulty does. One-to-one also removes the classroom audience, which for some students is the whole problem.
But sometimes maths is where a broader anxiety happens to be showing up, rather than the cause of it. If your child is getting physical symptoms before school, if they're avoiding attending, if the distress spills well beyond maths lessons, or if it's persisted for months regardless of how the work is going, then more maths is not the answer and no amount of good tutoring will be. The school's pastoral lead or your GP is the right first conversation, and it's worth having sooner rather than after another difficult term.
That's not a reason to do nothing about the maths. It's a reason not to expect the maths to fix it on its own.
