OCR GCSE Maths: what makes it different

OCR is the board people know least, which is how it ended up with a reputation. Parents ask me whether their child has been landed with the hard one, usually having heard it from someone whose own child sat something else. The short answer is no. The longer answer involves one genuine structural difference that's worth knowing about, because it catches students out on the morning of the first paper.

Three papers, equally weighted

OCR GCSE Maths is three papers. Each runs an hour and a half, each is worth 100 marks, and each counts for exactly a third of the grade.

Foundation candidates sit papers 01, 02 and 03. Higher candidates sit 04, 05 and 06. Same length, same marks, different content ceiling: Foundation runs to grade 5, Higher runs from 4 up to 9. Three papers of equal weight is the same shape AQA and Edexcel use. On structure, there's nothing unusual here at all.

The calculator order, which is genuinely different

Now the one real difference, and it's a good one to know.

AQA and Edexcel both open with the non-calculator paper. Paper 1 is the one where the calculator stays in the bag, and every student sitting those boards knows it, because it's been drilled into them all year.

OCR runs the other way round. Paper 1 is a calculator paper. The non-calculator paper is the middle one, paper 2, sitting between two calculator papers.

Does this change the maths? Not in the slightest. Does it matter? Yes, in two small ways that are easy to get right and annoying to get wrong. Your child needs to walk into the correct paper with the correct expectation, and a student who has spent March doing non-calculator practice "because paper 1 is the non-calculator one" has been practising the wrong thing for the wrong day. It also means the arithmetic-under-pressure paper arrives in the middle of the run rather than at the start, which some students find easier and some find worse.

Worth checking once, now: ask your child which of their three maths papers is the non-calculator one. If they say "paper 1" and they're on OCR, you've found a small misunderstanding with a fortnight of misdirected practice sitting behind it.

Where OCR feels different to sit

Beyond the ordering, the differences are matters of flavour rather than substance.

All three boards teach the same national curriculum content, because they have to. The topics are the topics. What varies is how questions are dressed: how much context is wrapped around a piece of maths, how the command words are phrased, how many multi-step problem-solving questions turn up and how they're introduced.

Students who've been taught on OCR all year absorb this without noticing. It's only visible when you switch, which is exactly why practising on the right board's papers matters more than any of the differences themselves.

Is OCR harder? What the boundaries say

This is the question underneath every other question, so here's the mechanism.

Grade boundaries are set after the papers have been sat and marked, not before. If a paper turns out to be harder than intended, the boundary for each grade moves down to compensate. That's the whole purpose of the system, and it applies equally across all three boards.

Which means a board can't quietly be harder in the way the playground rumour suggests. A tough OCR paper in a given June produces lower OCR boundaries that June. What is true: any board can produce an uncomfortable paper in a given year, and it feels dreadful coming out of the exam hall. That's a paper, not a board, and the boundaries absorb it.

What it changes about revision

Less than parents fear. Genuinely, almost nothing.

The content your child revises is the same content. The habits that work are the same habits: timed past papers, marked honestly against the scheme, with the mistakes reworked rather than glanced at. Everything in my guide on revising for GCSE Maths applies unchanged.

Two things do follow from the board, though.

Use OCR past papers as the main diet, because that's the question style your child will meet and the format they should stop noticing. And when you run out, papers from AQA and Edexcel are perfectly good practice on the same topics, as long as everyone understands they're practising the maths rather than rehearsing the exam. Running out of official papers is common by April, and other boards are the obvious answer.

Common questions

Is OCR GCSE Maths harder than AQA or Edexcel?

No board is allowed to be meaningfully harder, because boundaries are set after marking and move to absorb differences in difficulty. A harder paper lands a lower boundary. Any board can feel harder in a given year, but that's a property of one paper rather than of the board.

How many papers are there in OCR GCSE Maths?

Three, each an hour and a half and worth 100 marks, so all three count equally. Foundation candidates sit papers 01 to 03, Higher candidates 04 to 06. The order is calculator, non-calculator, calculator, which isn't the pattern AQA and Edexcel use.

Can a family choose which exam board their child sits?

In practice no. The school picks the board for the whole cohort, based on what suits its teaching and its resources, and a family can't opt into a different one. Worth accepting early, since the energy is better spent on the papers your child will actually sit.
