Year 10 maths: the quiet year that decides the grade

Nearly every enquiry I get arrives in Year 11, often after Christmas, sometimes in March. By then the tier's been decided, the syllabus is nearly finished, and we're working against a clock. The families who contact me in Year 10 are in a completely different position, and they usually end up paying for fewer hours. That's an uncomfortable thing for a tutor to write down, but it's true.

What Year 10 actually covers

Schools sequence the GCSE course differently, so there's no universal Year 10 syllabus. The pattern, though, is consistent: this is the year algebra stops being gentle.

Quadratics arrive. Simultaneous equations, rearranging formulae, straight-line graphs and their gradients, trigonometry, a serious amount of ratio and proportion. It's a lot, and more importantly it's foundational. Almost everything in Year 11 is built on top of it.

That's the mechanism behind a pattern I see constantly. A student is "fine at maths" through Year 9, wobbles somewhere in Year 10, and then appears to fall apart in Year 11. Nothing fell apart in Year 11. The Year 11 material simply assumed the Year 10 algebra was solid, and it wasn't, so every new topic arrived with a hole underneath it.

Warning signs that look like laziness

The signals are behavioural before they're academic, which is exactly why they get misread.

  • Homework taking much longer than it used to. The mark at the end might still be fine. The hour it took is the real signal.
  • Reluctance to show you the book. Not defiance. Usually embarrassment, and usually about something specific.
  • "We haven't done that yet" for something they have done. Often honest. It didn't land, so it isn't there.
  • Doing every subject's homework before maths. People put off what makes them feel stupid, and teenagers are people.
  • Fine in class, adrift in tests. Following a worked example is a different skill from producing one cold.

None of these look like a maths problem from across the kitchen. They look like attitude, and they get treated as attitude, which makes everything worse because now there's a row attached to the subject as well.

"They're fine, they just don't like it"

I hear this a lot, and it's worth pausing on, because it's usually the wrong way round.

Very few fourteen-year-olds dislike a subject they're succeeding at. Enjoyment mostly follows competence rather than causing it. So when a student says they hate maths, the more useful reading is that maths has recently started making them feel bad at something, and that feeling arrived before the dislike did.

Which is good news, oddly. Dislike is hard to shift by argument. Competence isn't hard to shift at all, and the dislike tends to fade quietly once the work stops feeling like a trap. The tier conversation starts here

Foundation or Higher gets talked about as a Year 11 decision. In reality the school starts forming a view during Year 10, based on how a student handles exactly the algebra described above.

That view isn't irreversible, and schools do move students. But it's much easier to influence in the autumn of Year 10 than in the spring of Year 11, when timetables and teaching sets have hardened around it. What an hour a week does now

Here's the arithmetic that families rarely do.

A gap found in Year 10 is usually one topic, and one topic takes a session or two to fix. That same gap found in March of Year 11 has spent a year underneath everything built on top of it, so it isn't one topic any more, it's four, and they all need unpicking at once while revision is supposed to be happening.

An hour a week from September of Year 10 is roughly thirty hours across the year, spread thin, keeping pace with the class. Three hours a week from March of Year 11 is about the same total, crammed into a term, during exam season, with a stressed student. Same money, very different experience, and honestly a very different result.

The check I'd run at the end of a Year 10 term: ask your child to solve a quadratic and rearrange a formula, on paper, without notes. Not to test them, and say so. If both come out smoothly, the foundations are fine and you can stop worrying. If either produces a long pause, you've found the thing worth spending the summer on, while it's still small.

If something's already slipping

Start by finding out what specifically isn't working, rather than adding general revision on top. "More maths" is a poor prescription for a problem nobody has named yet, and it's the one most families reach for first.

A marked test is the fastest route in. Look at what was lost and ask whether it's the same idea appearing in different disguises, which it usually is. Two or three related gaps explain most of a disappointing paper.

Then talk to the maths teacher, who knows precisely where your child sits and is generally glad to be asked in Year 10 rather than in April of Year 11. Common questions

Is Year 10 too early to get a maths tutor?

It's the opposite of too early. Year 10 is when gaps are still small enough to close in a few sessions rather than needing a rebuild, and when there's time for the fix to compound. Starting in Year 10 usually means fewer total hours than starting in the spring of Year 11, so it tends to cost less overall.

Watch how long homework takes rather than the mark it earns. Work that used to take twenty minutes and now takes an hour, or a new reluctance to show you the book, says more than one test score. Avoidance usually means something stopped making sense a few weeks ago.
